The Advent is Here

The Advent is Here

The advent is here.
The coming of the King so near you can taste it.

Or can you?

The disease that eats your bones, cancer,
invading the shell that is your soul’s home,
it is loud and distracting,
your attention retracting from the advent and the King.
Hope seems so fickle, so lost..
Is Hoping in Him worth the risk, the cost?

The advent is here.
The coming of the King so near you can taste it.

Or can you?

Divorce threatening the once-sacred vow.
Lying, cheating, anger and separation plowing through,
allowing your relationship to disintegrate.
Integrating hatred into your heart,
how can Hope or joy operate?
To celebrate advent seems so complicated,
as your marriage deteriorates, perpetuating the false notion
that Hope obliterates hearts.

The advent is here.
The coming of the King so near you can taste it.

Or can you?

Whether it's systemic oppression or individual’s [passive] aggression,
segregation and white supremacy has not been dismantled
and the skin you wear, though beautiful and worth celebrating,
ends up weighing more than it should, deflating your worth in a broken nation..
more than even equality, you crave liberation,
the season of advent beckons Hope
and you wonder if you dare accept the invitation.

The advent is here.
The coming of the King so near you can taste it.

Or can you?

Infertility, loss, rejection, sickness, poverty, brokenness..
spread throughout all generations.

Trauma and tragedy permeating us, bursting at our seams,
our veins screaming, blood boiling, how can we escape the skin that holds us in?
How do we celebrate advent?

It is in the opening of the hands, the surrender of understanding,
Hoping in something bigger than circumstance,
expanding our hearts and advancing our minds,
moving into the space that is advent.
Easier said than done,
but dear one, the victory is already won.

The coming of the King is near, permeating the atmosphere, now more than any other time of year.
The cheer of Christmas may seem distant, but I beg you to slow down and pause, to adhere.

Taste the goodness that is grace sincere,
and experience peace unravel as Hope appears.
