Sensitivity
Dear adoptive & foster parents: we aren’t typically informed about or prepared to parent our kids not born to us.
Nobody explicitly explains that *more than likely* your child will have an atypical nervous system.
Nobody tells you what that looks like on the day to day.
Nobody walks you through how to support them through *what should be* “simply” living.
Minor things flip their brains wide open, over stimulate their entire nervous system, over whelm their ability to function.
Sensory processing issues can affect every aspect of the day.
🛑 Have you heard of hyposensitivity + hypersensitivity?
❔Is your child constantly seeking to climb or push against things?
❔Do they seek skin/touch?
❔Is their pain tolerance shockingly high?
❔Are they clumsy / bumping into things?
❔Enjoy Spicey/intense foods?
These are a few signs of hyposensitivity— abnormally decreased sensitivity to sensory input.
Some signs of hypersensitivity— abnormally sensitive to sensory input:
✅ struggle to focus (due to sensitivity to constant noise/distraction)
✅ meltdowns in large groups of people (overstimulated)
✅ triggered/overwhelmed by loud + sudden noises (fireworks, slammed door, yelling, even noisy chewing)
✅ cannot stay calm with chaos (lots of lights, activity, music, noise, multiple screens, etc)
Some kids are hypo AND hyper sensitive, in different areas of their system.
This is why traditional parenting does not work or heal or help.
Does any of this sound familiar? There are ways to support our kids with these struggles & we will continue learning about that in this space.
The first thing to do is know they are worth us learning how to support them :)
I wonder if you’re also hypo or hyper sensitive in any way?
