Are you preparing to adopt or foster? Read this!
3 things you should focus on as you prepare to foster or adopt.
By no means is this a complete list of things. But these are 3 important categories & areas to spend solid time in before you welcome kids into your family via adoption or foster care.
1. TBRI 🪴 you can attend conferences, workshops, 1:1 coaching. You can read books and articles. You can watch YouTube videos.
Start learning & investing time into understanding this so when you’re in the thick of parenting a child with trauma, TBRI tools & strategies comes to mind.
2. Adoptees, former foster youth, birth parent voices. 💛🔺 There are so many people & educators & experiences on this app.
Make sure you’re not only subscribing to adoptive or foster parents.
When you feel like showing up defensive or to say “not all adoptive parents…” 🤫, pause. Breathe. Don’t make their pain & story about you. Don’t take their teaching as a personal attack. See it as a privilege to learn how to do better.
3. Deal with YOU. 🌿 Wowowow. This is a whole lot and lifelong (as with the other areas) journey.
Many adoptive & foster parents feel like they have their “stuff” mostly together and then they’re in the THICK of parenting kids from hard places and so much surfaces.
I cannot tell you how many people I’ve had the privilege of wading thru these areas as they have affected their parenting.
I exist to help prospective & current foster/adoptive parents show up better for their kids. Typically that starts with uncomfortable conversations in a very, very safe & confidential place.
Client sessions are typically jam packed with diving deep into these areas & working thru our unique motherhoods.
