Sage's Second Birthday Party!

Sage's Second Birthday Party!

I will never forget the week leading to Sage's second birthday. It will forever mark a time in our life where the absolute grace of God was on our family.

When his second birthday finally arrived, I couldn't have been more grateful to call myself his mama. The gratitude of being his has always run deep, but after our previous week, it was ten fold.

I stared at him sleeping soundly far past his usual waking hour, and saw his features resembling more of a kid than a baby.

If you haven't read about the day we met Sage, you should. It was quite a broken blessing. Here it is in a two part series (they're short, don't worry). It's also documented pretty detailed in my book, This Undeserved Life.

Because we were in the hospital for much of the week leading up to our first son's birthday, we had very little ready for his party.

The night before his party, I was so excited to go to the African American Hair + Beauty Supply Store, Mid-K Beauty, to get a few different combs and hair products. I was more than ready to start trying finger coils, comb twists, and box braids on our little man.

For his big day, I decided doing finger coils was going to be easiest and also that I would have the most luck because I have yet to master parting a moving toddlers head.

Sage's party theme was barn farm animal, because animals are his actual favorite. I of course forgot to take any photos with my camera, because, well, my brain is sleepless for two years straight now (we have babies up every single hour, whoop). But, here are some iphone photos from our day!

I ordered this invite off of Etsy, and it turned out great. I cried when I first saw it because how is he actually two? And how is he old enough to actually get excited about things like cows and horses and pigs?

Ordered this sweet little chalk board sign to celebrate Sage's milestones. I ordered it as a 16x20 and stuck it in a frame! Also...Sage is now 31.5 pounds. HE IS GROWING SO BIG AND SO FAST. I can hardly stand it.

I seriously cannot believe my big boy is two! He is such a joy to have around, he has taught me so much more about love than I ever dreamed of learning, and he has revealed to me a deep part of the Father's heart.

Sage has taught me we can love anyone really well and genuinely, if we want to.

He has shown me how far I have to grow in patience, but also shown me that I have a deep well of compassion and understanding.

Sage has taught me to slow down—even though I am terrible at it—because his life has demanded it with frequent week-long stays at the children's hospitals and multiple appointments each week.

Sage, you are such a big part of my world.

We didn't have much in the way of decorations, so we threw together this barn door, blew up some really un balloons, and labeled snacks in fun ways :) I may have snuck a few of Sage's millions of farm animal toys and put them on the table too!

Our great friend Seth baked + decorated all of the cupcakes. My mother in law and I made the cow cake, WHICH, Sage picked his nose through the duration of us singing to him Happy Birthday. HA!

I have felt bummed about not being more on top of his birthday and not setting up a photoshoot like I did for their first birthdays. The truth is photoshoots with the boys and no help are just hard these days. One is always running in the direction of dog poop or a cliff while the other one is throwing himself across wherever we are, getting muddy. It's pretty wet over here in Oregon right now, and my backdrop isn't the easiest thing to haul up and down the stairs at this point.

All that to say, I decided to take out my camera for some life-style styled shots and snap a few sweet pictures of them to document the week Sage turned two :)

Are they not just the best little humans? They have been SO funny lately, cracking me up left and right. There are some really hard parts of every day, but I expect that. It's the amount of moments I find myself laughing with them that has thrown me off. I knew I'd love motherhood...but dang...I sure do love motherhood with these two.

Their new favorite spot is our IKEA chair:

More than anything, I'm always so humbled into a deep sense of gratitude for our family and friends. We have such a beautiful community that spreads across the valley, and I don't know where we would be without them. To have so many people loving us and loving our boy just blows me away and reminds me how important true community is.

Sage, my sweet firstborn son, you are such a treasure and I am beyond grateful to have celebrated your second birthday. Grateful to tears to celebrate you.

What a life undeserved.
